As the weather here in Charleston starts to take a turn for the cold, here are 5 things to do during the winter months. We think Charleston is a great place to live and easy to enjoy the beauty of the city during any season.

Downtown Charleston is beautiful on any day but is especially decorated during the Christmas season. Many of the historical buildings are decorated and Marion Square puts on a special display. Since it seldom gets brutally cold in Charleston going downtown for a night is pleasant if you dress correctly. Make your way downtown and take advantage of all the great photo opportunities in our own little winter wonderland. If you do start to get cold you can always duck into a store or cafe that line the street fronts for some warmth and good coffee.

The Festival of Lights is just around the corner and is always a great time for all ages. Families, couples, and everyone else can enjoy the Lights. Located in most county parks the Lights offer something for everyone. You can stay in the warmth of your car and drive around and look at the large amount of light display. You can get out and look at the wet sand sculpture, the giant handmade Christmas cards, and even roast some marshmallows. One of the highlights of the year in Charleston.

For New Years I recommend the annual Yorktown Countdown Party. The large USS Yorktown parked in the harbor is the party host to usher in the new year. This event requires you to purchase tickets in advance and is 21 years of age and up. The party is complete with live music and is a lively and fun event for adults. Dress to impress as you head to the retired aircraft carrier for a late night of fun.
If something spooky is more your cup of tea there are several haunte
d walking tours Downtown. Several historic points in Charleston have haunted tours including the Old Jail and Provost Dungeon. These are typically guided and include a light bit of historical knowledge as well. Do not be fooled though these are not your typical historical tours as they are almost always conducted at night. These are extremely fun if you like to be spooked.

One of the great attractions in Charleston is the South Carolina Aquarium. The aquarium is a great place to learn about the various wildlife that call South Carolina their home. The exhibits are varied, not every exhibit is salt water or beach related, and many are hands on for you to be able to touch and interact with the animals that you are learning about. The South Carolina Aquarium is a large complex and you can easily spend a whole day looking at all the exhibits and almost all of them are indoors. Making this a great activity on a chilly day.
